U.S. First Lady Jill Biden visited Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, Oct. 25, 2021 to honor the Airmen and their families that assisted in the mission to evacuate Americans, third country nationals, and at-risk Afghans as part of the largest airlift in U.S. history.
Dr. Biden spent the afternoon delivering a speech to attendees followed by a personal meet and greet with service members and their families that had a direct impact on the evacuation.
“It’s incredible but it’s also not surprising because when duty calls anytime, anywhere this community answers,” said Dr. Biden. “With all my heart thank you for all that you’ve done and all that you will continue to do.”
Her speech resonates with JB Charleston’s mission in providing rapid global mobility anytime, anywhere.
During the operation, JB Charleston Airmen spearheaded the evacuation by being the first in and out of Kabul, Afghanistan. Crews from the 437th Airlift Wing and 315th Airlift Wing, with operational support from the 628th Air Base Wing were able to aid the 82nd Airborne Division in the evacuation of approximately 124,000 American citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, third country nationals, and at-risk Afghans.
