Teaching music is in Chief Warrant Officer 4 Scott Pierson’s blood. So is learning and performing. Thanks to the support he receives from his employer, Yelm Community Schools, he’s able to do it all.

“This really has been a perfect marriage for the last 16 years with Yelm Community Schools, which has allowed me to pursue my doctorate and be the commander of the 133rd Army National Guard Band,” said Pierson.

Pierson wanted to acknowledge his employer in a special way, and reached out to the Employer Support to the Guard and Reserve program to help.

On October 28, 2021, Pierson presented Brian Wharton, Superintendent of Yelm Community Schools with the ESGR “Above and Beyond” award for everything they have done for him.

“I have always felt supported in my military service by my employer,” said Pierson. “I took a 15 month leave of absence to take a position as a Warrant Officer Strength manager, and when I returned the district was wildly supporting and helping with my transition back.”

Just like many Guardsmen, Pierson was activated multiple times in the last two years to support state emergencies. Every time he was activated, Yelm Community Schools not only let him perform his duties, they ensured he continued to receive his pay raises and benefits he was due.

“During activations I had several administrators and other teachers reach out to me asking how they could support me and my spouse,” said Pierson.

This award marks the third time Pierson has presented the School district with an ESGR award. The school has previously been awarded the Patriot Award twice.

“It is one of the greatest honors to be the commander of the 133rd Army National Guard Band and the director of bands at Yelm Community Schools,” said Pierson. “It is an honor to be part of this community and be able to serve both my state and nation now for the last 27 years.”
