JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii. – Service members stationed on the island of Oahu recently took part in a community cleanup Oct. 26, 2021, along the Pearl Harbor Bike Path in Aiea, Hawaii.
The cleanup is part of an ongoing plan called the Pearl Harbor Heritage Trail Restoration Project. The project is a coordinated effort between the joint services and local community members and departments to help restore the cleanliness, safety and accessibility of the path.
“One of the core values of the Air Force is service over self, so we believe it is our responsibility to be stewards of our community,” said Senior Master Sgt. Nanette Maglinao, 624th Force Support Flight superintendent. “By fostering and engaging with the community through cleanups and volunteerism, we’re fulfilling that core value, while also forming and nurturing connections that strengthen compassion and trust.”
More than 74 service members joined over 300 community volunteers at the cleanup, including Airmen, Sailors, Soldiers, civilians, Reservists, and more.
Total force cooperation not only increases the number of possible volunteers but also provides opportunities to share resources, network and nurture relationships, said Maglinao.
“These partnerships allow us to brainstorm on other volunteer opportunities, to do our part in ensuring this beautiful island we call home remains protected and well-cared-for,” she said. “I think joint partnerships also enable an open dialogue between branches of service and duty status – and remind us all of our common purpose: to serve our communities and our nation.”
As service members move due to permanent change of station orders, they are often introduced to and ingrained into unfamiliar communities, but for many Reservists, they may be serving the community they’ve known for most of their lives.
“Many of our Reserve Citizen Airmen were born and raised here, so it’s important that we respect their land and resources and show them that we are dedicated to not only taking care of our Airmen and their families, but to the place they call ‘home,’” said Maglinao.
Maglinao emphasized that it is important to ‘make it count’ in the things people do. Whether that is reflected in their personal or professional lives, or in their community, it’s important to be the difference in whatever you do – and volunteering in the community is one way of doing that.
