The Georgia Department of Defense’s Peach State STARBASE hosted a visit of over 20 teachers from Dowell Elementary School Nov. 2, 2021, at Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, Georgia.

STARBASE is a national Department of Defense youth program founded in 2000 designed to increase interest and ability in science, technology, engineering, and math subjects amongst school children. in an at-risk population. There are currently more than 75 locations in 40 states and territories with a combined attendance of over 100,000 students each year.

Peach State STARBASE is the Georgia Department of Defense’s variation of the national program. Created in 2001, Peach State STARBASE exemplifies Georgia DoD’s effort to leverage its resources for the betterment of all people and maintain strong rapport with local communities.

Peach State STARBASE used this visit to introduce projects and activities to Dowell Elementary School teachers who are scheduled to bring their students in January and February 2022.

“I am very impressed [of Peach State STARBASE],” said Janice Belcher, a teacher with Dowell Elementary School. “I think this is going to show the kids a real-world example of how everything is related, like science and math with things like collaboration and working in a team.”

The visit began with a model rocket construction lesson. After the teachers finished construction, they launched the small rockets just outside of the state headquarters building on Clay National Guard Center.

Next, the class learned about avionics through flight simulators and tablet applications. Peach State STARBASE has an entire room devoted to flight simulation with desktop computers and software, foot pedal and control yoke.

The flight simulation begins on the runway of Dobbins Air Reserve Base where students can fly Cessna 172 Skyhawks over the local area and their communities, offering some instruction on geography.

After lunch, the Dowell Elementary School teachers received a lesson on development and application of drones. Then they flew small drones through an obstacle course preconstructed at the Peach State STARBASE building.

The visit ended with a hangar tour and static display viewing of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. Georgia Army National Guard Soldiers led the tour and provided information about the helicopters while the teachers climbed in and out of the interior and cockpit.

Here, STARBASE students have the opportunity to interact with military personnel inside and outside of the classroom, exploring careers and observing real world application of STEM subjects.

A typical STARBASE program comprises of 25 hours of instruction spread across five days. Peach State STARBASE is flexible and capable of tailoring curriculum to needs of classes and schools on the schedule.

The Dowell Elementary School teachers received only a morsal of the projects and activities Peach State STARBASE offers. Amongst STARBASE’s latest additions are activities centered around 3-D printers and robotics.

STARBASE is a government funded program so attending schools and students pay no fee to attend. STARBASE is accessible to all public, private and home-based schools.

The timing of the Dowell Elementary School visit coincides closely with National STEM Education Day which falls on Nov. 8.

“I would like to give a huge thank you [to STARBASE and the Georgia DoD],” Belcher said. “I think this is a great program, especially for underrepresented populations, and I think it’s a great opportunity for community outreach.”
