The 2021 flu shot campaign is in full swing at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, Belgium.

The shots are available now at military healthcare facilities around the region.

“Everyone over the age of 6 months old is encouraged to get their flu shot to help reduce the risk of getting flu themselves and decrease the transmission of influenza to others,” said U.S Army Maj. Holly Archer, the deputy commander for nursing at the SHAPE and Brussels healthcare facilities. “Vaccination reduces the risk of illness as well as hospitalization and deaths related to influenza.”

Adults and children 4 years and older can get their flu shot at community based events around the Benelux during November and early December. To view a full list of the 2021 flu shot campaign dates, visit the SHAPE Healthcare Facility Facebook page or call the clinic for more information. Walk-ins for the flu shot are available at the SHAPE Healthcare Facility Immunization Clinic on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

“Everyone should get a flu shot,” said Archer. “We are especially worried about serious complications and death for certain high-risk groups such as those over the age of 65, pregnant people, children under 2 years old, and individuals with certain medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease, chronic lung disorders and more.”

A full list and more details on high risk individuals for flu can be located on the U.S. Center for Disease Control’s website. Active-duty members, NATO, and Department of Defense beneficiaries are all eligible for the flu shot offered by the SHAPE Healthcare Facility.

“It’s predicted to be a tough year for influenza with the expectation that we will see higher numbers of influenza related infections and deaths,” said Archer. “This prediction is based on the predicted strains of the influenza virus and the risk of transmission as [COVID-19] restrictions are being relaxed or lifted.”

On Oct. 28, DODEA staff and teachers wait in line for their influenza vaccine in the SHAPE American Middle School Multipurpose Room.

This is one of many stops for the 2021 flu shot campaign as it makes its way around SHAPE and Chievres.
