PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (Oct. 22, 2021) – The Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) pulled into Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Oct. 22, 2021, for the ship’s first port visit since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
Bunker Hill is the first U.S. Navy ship to visit the city and have a liberty call since 2019. During the port visit, the crew explored the city, learned about the local history, and engaged with the people of Puerto Vallarta.
“After two back-to-back deployments without liberty port calls, it was an amazing opportunity to provide the crew a quality of life port visit,” said Capt. Shea Thompson, commanding officer of Bunker Hill. “I am proud of how the Bunker Hill team represented the United States and our Navy throughout our time in port. The meeting with local leaders proved fruitful as we continue to build on our already-strong relationship with partners in this area of operations.”
While in Puerto Vallarta, Bunker Hill’s leadership engaged in an active discussion with Puerto Vallarta’s Mayor, Luis Alberto Michel Rodriguez, and the Commissioner of Public Security of Puerto Vallarta, Luis Fernando Muñoz Ortega, regarding the positive impact of the ship’s visit on foreign relations, and the potential for future community service projects between Mexico and the United States.
Bunker Hill, part of Carrier Strike Group Nine, is homeported in San Diego.
