CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan -- U.S. Marines with Provost Marshal’s Office, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific, gathered for a formation to present a Marine the Jim Kallstrom Award on Camp Foster, Nov. 3.
Lance Cpl. Noelle Gallegos, a patrolman with PMO, was selected for the award due to her acts of bravery while off-duty as she helped prevent a Marine from harming themselves. The award recognizes Marines based on their outstanding professional competence, exemplary leadership skills, significant contributions, and heroic or life saving actions.
“I support Gallegos receiving the Jim Kallstrom Award for bravery,” said Staff Sgt. Amanda Phelps, the staff noncommissioned officer in charge, with PMO. “I believe Gallegos fully understands all aspects of her job and can lead, but also set the example for new Marines and by doing so, influence the old Marines.”
Brig. Gen. William Bowers, the commanding general of MCIPAC, presented Gallegos with the award. The Kallstrom awards are given annually and divided into two categories: leadership and bravery. The awards are exclusively for military police in the Marine Corps.
“When I received the award I felt nervous,” said Gallegos. “I appreciated my peers and the command's support who congratulated me for my bravery.”
Gallegos’ award cites how she risked her safety, displayed bravery, and the ability to make sound, tactical decisions in a life-threatening moment. Gallegos received the award for helping prevent a distressed Marine from harming themselves and potentially others.
“Gallegos has always been a hard-working Marine,” said Phelps. “She has always been outgoing and she is easy to speak with. She has great people skills and maintains a mature personality.”
All patrolmen are responsible for reducing mishaps, increasing mission readiness, and preventing and preserving warfighter missions. Through the emergency and protective services they provide they take care of each individual Marine, sailor, civilian, and local national employee whenever they are called to duty.
“I think what happened is an example of why we need to continue to look out for our brothers and sisters and know when we need help,” said Gallegos. "I pray that the Marine in distress will make a full recovery so they can continue their journey and make a difference with their second chance in life
