PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2021) – The California Medical Detachment Physical Therapy Clinic celebrated a 329% increase in floor space during a ribbon cutting ceremony at their new facility here Nov. 9.
“It’s just a much larger space that allows us to cater to more patients at one time and really increase tenfold what we do for [the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and Naval Postgraduate School],” said Lt. Col. Kenneth Reed, CalMed commander.
Attendees included Col. Varman Chhoeung, USAG PoM commander, and Col. James Kievit, commandant of DLIFLC, as well as the command team of the 311th Training Squadron, Air Force Lt. Col. William Taylor, commander, and Senior Master Sgt. Kristian Keahi, senior enlisted advisor. Reed and several members of the clinic’s staff cut the ribbon together, and in his remarks, Reed said the team is committed to ensuring readiness.
“They stay engaged day in and day out, because at the end of the day, it’s all about the readiness,” Reed said. “That’s what we’re here for.”
Dusty Hurd, the clinic’s physical therapy supervisor, said the team takes pride in exceeding the U.S. Army Medical Command and Tricare standards, but ultimately, their inspiration comes from their patients.
“It’s not about any one of us, but it’s about the faces that are on the photos in the pictures that you might see upstairs as you walk through here,” Hurd said. “It’s about the other multiple thousands of individuals and service members that come through here that pump us up, that keep us going and make us proud of what we’re doing each day.”
The 3,000-square-foot facility in Bldg. 454 has two floors, and the top floor includes about 30 blown-up and mounted photos of patients from the past few years. Most of the photos show the service members in key moments of their military careers, but some, such as one of an ultra-marathoner running, depict them in other active pursuits.
The clinic’s previous location was in a 700-square-foot space inside the Price Fitness Center at PoM, Hurd said, and although he appreciates the graciousness of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation for providing the space, it was time for a bigger facility.
“Thank you CalMed. Thank you to the PoM units. Thank you to the NPS units that have been supporting us over the last few years and continue to support us in the health care of all your service members,” Hurd said. “We appreciate the upgrade in our clinical space.”
Hurd said the increased space, which allows for a full weight rack, for example, will help the clinic to move toward a fitness culture that will decrease the likelihood of future injury in patients.
“The further toward fitness that we help our patients to get, the more we buffer away from injury or illness or sickness,” Hurd said. “With our model we don’t want to just stop at getting somebody to not have pain, but we want to buffer them so that they are resistant to getting injured again.”
In the course of a year at the previous location, Hurd said the clinic’s staff saw about 2,000 individuals, who made more than 15,000 visits, and he expects those numbers to increase at the new location.
In addition to traditional physical therapy treatments with corrective exercises, the clinic offers spinal manipulation, dry needling, cupping, and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, Hurd said. The clinic also offers running and weight lifting clinics, functional movement and injury screenings and fitness training education.
The clinic, which only serves service members and not family members or retirees, is at the corner of Army St. and Kit Carson Road, near the CalMed PoM U.S. Army Health Clinic at 473 Cabrillo St., Bldg. 422.
The clinic is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, but sometimes offers classes that extend the hours at the end of the day. The clinic’s phone number is (831) 242-6740, and the main clinic’s appointment line at (866) 957-2256 can also route calls to the physical therapy clinic.
