Moody takes on Mosaic Tiger 22-1

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, GEORGIA, UNITED STATES

    11.15.2021

Story by Tech. Sgt. Jessica Smith McMahan

    23rd Wing

Moody Air Force Base is beginning exercise Mosaic Tiger 22 -1 today, Nov. 15, 2021. The week-long exercise includes participation from Dyess AFB, Warner Robins AFB and MacDill AFB and is being observed by several different bases throughout Air Combat Command.

Mosaic Tiger provides an opportunity to test many capabilities to include that of multi-capable Airmen, mission generation squadrons, air base squadrons, base defense squadrons, operations from contingency locations and communication.
Although the exercise is meant to focus on several concepts it places emphasis on agile combat employment, command and control and distributed operations.

“As we disperse our units out to contingency locations during Mosaic Tiger, we wanted to create an organization within the 23rd Wing that allows us to stay connected and still execute commander’s intent,” explained Lt. Col. Ken Roberts, 23rd Wing, chief of A-Staff, “And so we’ve stood up an A-Staff using highly skilled and highly talented Airmen from across various organizations to stand up this organization and produce processes and procedures that help us get after second and third order effects that allow us to support and sustain operations at these dispersed locations.”

While Moody AFB may be the host of this exercise, Mosaic Tiger reaches much farther than the 23rd Wing.

“Mosaic Tiger is not just important to Moody AFB, it’s important to Air Combat Command – we are setting the pace and the way that future combat air forces deploy,” said Col. Russel Cook, 23rd Wing, commander.
With the 23rd Wing in the initial operational capabilities phase of becoming a Lead Wing, this large-force exercise, allows the Wing to combine all necessary elements needed to be a Lead Wing capable of successfully and competently employing ACE concepts, he further explained.

Just as important as the exercise itself is the opportunity it provides to identify friction areas to improve upon. By identifying issues, the Wing is able to discuss areas for improvement and make recommendations based on what does and doesn’t work, said Maj. Zach McClelland, exercise director, adding there’s many expected learning points to be seen in becoming a Lead Wing.

By acting as a Lead Wing, Moody AFB is helping to realign and advance forces in order to be more agile in the way said forces are employed – the basis of the ACE concepts of operations. Mosaic Tiger is a means to test the ability to command and control in a contested and degraded environment.

“We hope to test, validate and invalidate our assumptions and plans on how we do exercises and come up with lessons learned and ways to be better for October of 2022 when we step out the door as a Lead Wing,” Cook said.
