CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea – Twenty-five U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Soldiers and Family members toured the Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon Nov. 13.

The city tour was sponsored by the Tourism Division of Suwon and coordinated through the chaplain’s office. The event aimed to foster ready and resilient teams and strengthen the ROK-U.S. alliance through a friendship opportunity with the Good Neighbor Program of Suwon.

"This trip impacted me in a big way. It helped me experience more of Korea’s beautiful culture,” said Spc. Kemonei Butler, who has been stationed in South Korea for 23 months. “Additionally, it really helped me face my fear of heights by getting in the 150-meter helium air balloon and overall was a great experience, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone.”

The tour group visited Hwaseong Fortress, a piled-stone and brick fortress from the Joseon Dynasty. According to the tour pamphlet, the fortress was built in the late 18th century by King Jeongjo for defensive purposes, to form a new political basis, and to house the remains of his father, Crown Prince Jangheon.

The participants also experienced a 150-meter-high helium air balloon, Korean archery, Aquarium Planet, a media art performance at Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, and a meal at Korean barbeque restaurant.

The city tour was a positive experience for married Soldiers to share with their Families and for single Soldiers to build resilience. In addition, the event gave the Soldiers and their Families a great opportunity to learn about Korean culture and history and helped them experience more of Korea's beautiful surrounding scenery.
