BEALE AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - For the past 18 years, Marysville has hosted the Yuba-Sutter Veterans Day Parade.
Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and was established in 1954 to honor all individuals who have served in the Armed Forces.
Cindy Verrill is the founder and chairman of the parade committee for the Yuba Sutter Veterans Day Parade. Every year she makes an effort to create a special day for local veterans. Verrill, a veteran herself, retired from the U.S. Air Force working in aircrew egress systems.
“Saying thank you to everyone who has ever worn the uniform, whether you are that World War II veteran or if you are active duty and are the 18 or 19 year old that just left basic training, that's what it is all about,” Verrill said. “If you have taken the time to put the uniform on, you deserve to have someone come up and say, ‘Thank you for your service’.”
The parade was halted last year due to the coronavirus. This year it marched on with necessary precautions for safety. Beale minimized their participation in the parade compared to the past with a small group of Blackbird maintainers walking in the parade.
“This is our 20th year attempting a Veterans Day Parade and our 18th successful parade,” said Verrill. “We lost the 2018 parade to the Camp Fire and the 2020 parade to COVID. Beale has been involved since day one.”
Master Sgt. Jessica Kinnee, 234th Intelligence Squadron geospatial intelligence analyst, is a veteran’s service officer for American Legion Post 705 and was in charge of rallying Recce Town volunteers to participate in the parade.
“Beale participates to honor our veterans,” said Kinnee. “We have a lot of local veterans in Yuba-Sutter County and it's a day where we celebrate all the service our military members have done.”
