Two ribbon cutting ceremonies were held Nov. 16 – one in support of strengthening our infrastructure and the other enhancing our quality of life.
The first ceremony took place at the new $31M wastewater-treatment plant (WWTP). It replaces the outdated and deteriorated wastewater treatment systems that had been in service since 1941 and had not been upgraded since 1993.
Before the project, NAS Corpus Christi operated and maintained two separate WWTPs, one for domestic wastewater and one for industrial wastewater. The new system replaces outdated and deteriorated component parts and combines the two waste streams, effectively treating them simultaneously, while ensuring the treated water satisfies all regulatory discharge parameters.
“This plant plays a vital role in treating our domestic and industrial waste so it can be safely discharged in the bay,” said Capt. Chris Jason, NAS Corpus Christi commanding officer. “This is a critical enabler to the Corpus Christi Army Depot’s industrial processes and to the quality of life of all base residents and employees. This plant ensures our tenant commands can accomplish their mission without harming the environment.
“These upgrades to the plant help us to take care of our environment and protect our strong relationship with the Corpus Christi Community.”
Joseph J. Henderson and Son, Inc., contractors began the project began in June 2019.
“J.J. Henderson has been an outstanding contractor and a great partner on this project. And, the Public Works staff did an outstanding job managing this complex project,” said Cmdr. Stephen Lampert, NASCC PWO.
The second ribbon cutting was for two new tennis courts and a basketball court. The previous courts were west of the Fitness Center and were severely degraded. They were demolished as part of the construction of the new Corpus Christi Army Depot Admin Annex that is underway. The $1.37M project was awarded November 2020 and is located adjacent to the Housing Office.
“This new location will provide easier access to our housing residents and is a great addition to our MWR facilities,” said Jason.
“It is great to be improving the infrastructure with new facilities,” he added. “In the next few years we should see a new ballfield and track added to this area.”
