In honor of Veterans Day, the Ohio State University kicked off celebrations at the Military Appreciation Game at Ohio Stadium on Nov. 13, 2021. The Ohio National Guard provided 50 service members to be recognized during the pregame activities. Ohio Air and Army National Guard members stood on the field as the national anthem was played and saluted as the flag was presented and raised by Ohio State University ROTC cadets.
As part of the commemorations of the Military Appreciation Game, service members past, present and future were honored. Ten new Ohio National Guard recruits were invited to the game to be sworn in on the field by Maj. Gen. John C. Harris Jr., Ohio adjutant general. Harris was also honored later that night, joined by his wife Angela, in recognition of his accomplishments and those of the Soldiers and Airmen he commands. Six veterans from all branches and times of service were also acknowledged and thanked.
“Service doesn't end when you retire from military service,” said Harris. “Across Ohio, veterans continue to serve our communities by making positive contributions, building stronger futures and inspiring future generations.”
Many service members attended the game with family members to cheer on the Ohio State Buckeyes, which took the victory over the Purdue Boilermakers.
