NAVAL STATION ROTA, SPAIN (November 19, 2021) – Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) completed the USS Ross (DDG 71) Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) on time and on budget, Nov. 19.
FDRMC executed the SRA by tackling an ambitious scope of work that included work on the forward and aft intakes and uptakes, replacing all three gas turbine generator mounts. While maintaining a standby generator for emergency power, the Ross team developed a detailed plan to ensure proper work sequencing and integration between the many priorities of the availability.
"During execution, the USS Ross project team reaped the benefits from the hard work they put into developing a detailed plan. When faced with the inevitable adversity of ship repair execution, the team urgently attacked problems and implemented solutions which enabled on-time completion and delivered combat readiness to the Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) forces," said Cmdr. Paul Murch, Officer in Charge at FDRMC Detachment Rota.
The FDRMC Rota team worked with the ship’s force, the contractor and other stakeholders to ensure that they met every key milestone on time and successfully completed this 102-day availability.
“The project team maintained an over-achieving attitude to complete all work on time and deliver a combat ready asset back to the fleet. The team swarmed and persevered through every challenge presented during this availability with integrated efforts and a teamwork mentality. Communication was at the core of the successful completion of this availability,” said Jorge Mota, Project Manager for the USS Ross.
Four U.S. Navy destroyers are based in Rota, Spain, and assigned to Commander, Task Force 65 in support of NATO’s Integrated Air Missile Defense architecture. These FDNF-E ships have the flexibility to operate throughout the waters of Europe and Africa, from Cape of Good Hope to the Arctic Circle - demonstrating their mastery of the maritime domain.
“The support and resources provided by the FDRMC team in Rota, our project team, and local contractors is second to none. The communication, teamwork and ownership from each stakeholder ensured that Ross was able to complete six separate certification events during this SRA, enabling simultaneous increases in our warfighting and material readiness. Ross is exactly where she needs to be in the FDNF-E readiness cycle, and ready to answer all bells,” said Cmdr. Scott Jones, Commanding Officer of USS Ross (DDG 71).
USS Ross, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, operates in support of U.S. national security interests in the Sixth Fleet area of responsibility. FDRMC is responsible for performing maintenance, repair and modernization for all destroyers homeported in Rota, Spain, including the execution of major maintenance availabilities.
FDRMC provides fleet technical assistance, voyage repair, assessments, intermediate and depot level maintenance, and diving and salvage to Forward Deployed Naval Forces in Europe and the Middle East and for Deployed ships in the Fifth and Sixth Fleet areas of responsibility.
