For both military and civilian staff members who work in Lejeune Hall on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Boney Curneal has made a lasting impact on their lives through his professionalism, story-telling and exceptional barber work. From Rose Hill to MCB Camp Lejeune, Curneal began his professional barber career in 1984 after graduating from Harris Barber College in Raleigh.

“My two older brothers were barbers, so I wanted to be a barber! It runs in the family,” said Curneal. “I enjoy being a barber, it’s the only job I really love.”

Curneal’s contributions sprouted from working as a barber for American Clippers at the Marine Corps Exchange to working for Marine Corps Community Services Lejeune-New River. Today, Curneal commands the role of primary barber for the small shop inside Lejeune Hall, the headquarters building for Marine Corps Installations East (MCIEAST) and the MCIEAST Regional Brig. (MCI EastEAST Regional Brig)

Along his journey, Curneal has learned extensively from his conversations and interactions with military and civilian customers. “Curneal is very friendly, we always reminisce about way back then and talk about who’s going to retire first,” said Michael Newton, executive assistant for the MCIEAST Manpower Division. “He’s just easy to get along with and tell stories with.”

Despite not holding the title of Marine himself, Curneal undoubtedly exemplifies Marine Corps values himself that are reflected through his experience serving civilian and Marine leaders over the past 40 years.

For his unwavering and dedicated service, Brig. Gen. Andrew M. Niebel, commanding general of MCIEAST-MCB Camp Lejeune, presented Curneal with a letter of appreciation on Nov. 9, 2021 during a ceremony surrounded by his customers and friends.

“I want to personally thank you for your service to our community over these past 40 years,” said Niebel. “Your hard work and dedication here has left a lasting impact on the people of this building, and will truly not be forgotten.”
