Recruiting is often a thankless job. For Sgt. 1st Class Tramal Williams, a Washington Army National Guard recruiter from Bremerton, he finds job satisfaction with every new member and recruited 27 new soldiers to the organization in 2021, earning him the title of Recruiter of the Year.

“Bringing in this many has been tiring, but it is all worth the while,” said Williams. “For us being recruiters, it doesn’t stop once we enlist a new member. We are still their mentor as they prepare, their sounding board and counsel when they are at basic and help them when they return.”

In front of his fellow recruiters and other members of the Washington Army National Guard, Brig. Gen. Dan Dent, Commanding General and Command Sgt. Maj. Eric Honeycutt, State Command Sgt. Maj. honored Williams for his hard work in 2021.

“We should all strive to do what Sgt. 1st Class Williams did this year, how he has helped grow our Guard,” said Dent from the top of a Stryker Fighting Vehicle. “He wakes up every morning and focuses on accomplishing his mission.”

One of Williams greatest success stories of 2021 was the recruitment of the James family. Mark James joined the Washington Army National Guard on June 30, 2020, but due to COVID-19 delaying his basic training, he didn’t leave until October. After he joined, so did his sisters Caitlin, Courtney and Kelsey – as well as Courtney’s husband Balint Moreland.

“I just spread the gospel of the Guard. It is who spreads it from there and where it goes has helped,” Williams added. “It excites me to help people, just fun to see them succeed and move forward in life.”

During the ceremony multiple recruiters were also honored for their hard work during the past year. Master Sgt. Roland Hawkins and Staff Sgt. Robert Williams were recognized for their leadership at their respective recruiting stations. Staff Sgt. James Benham was the recruiting “Rookie of the Year,” while Sgt. 1st Class Tami Green and Staff Sgts. Robert Berry, Timothy Bowes and Kassidy Palmer were all recognized for meeting or exceeding their missions in 2021.

“We have an amazing recruiting command, we are getting stronger because of you,” said Dent. “You continue to do what you can to strengthen our Guard and we will continue to support you.”
