FORT CARSON, Colo. – With open arms, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) welcomed back retired Green Berets by hosting a luncheon for current 10th SFG(A) Operators and alumni at the LaRochelle Dining Facility Nov. 19, 2021.
The first-ever Legacy Luncheon, an initiative proposed by Group’s Trojan Legacy program, had a turnout of around 70 attendees. Trojan Legacy is a multifaceted, 10th SFG(A) program which provides resources to Soldiers, teammates, and families in advance of deployments and aids in transitions back to civilian life. The luncheon contributed to those resources by building a bridge between the retirees and current Operators.
“Every one of our retirees here has transitioned successfully,” said the Trojan Legacy Noncommissioned Officer in Charge. “Retirement is an emotional event because most people have spent half—if not more—of their life in this job. Having a mentor when Soldiers transition can help set them up for success when they get out.”
The Trojan Legacy NCOIC also said the program wants to be sure that upon their transition from Green Beret to civilian, that each person has a plan, purpose and identity.
During the luncheon, Group Commander Col. Luke VanAntwerp spoke, giving retirees insight on expectations and responsibilities of current Group Soldiers, as well as where the regiment stands today.
“It’s good to get willing alumni and active-duty members of the regiment together occasionally for a number of reasons,” said retired Master Sgt. Dave Conner. “To inform alumni of current-future activities and initiatives; establish a platform for alumni to provide input from a different perspective; allow active members the opportunity to educate alumni on the ‘current state of the Soldier’; bridge generational gaps and build mutual respect.”
Over years, people drift apart as they go their own ways. During the luncheon, Conner used the opportunity to reconnect with some old teammates he hadn’t seen in some time.
“It was great to meet up with retired Command Sgt. Maj. Tomas G. Sandoval to discuss our current life status,” Conner said. “Tomas was on my team when I retired, and he took the team then and went on to do great things.”
Legacy Luncheon is about creating a network of people who are willing and capable to support current service members. Although the retirees are comprised of former Green Berets, current Operators and Enablers of Group are invited to attend future Trojan Legacy luncheons. The next Legacy Luncheon is slated for Spring 2022.
