The top priority of the Space Launch Delta 30th Security Forces Squadron is to provide security to Vandenberg Space Force Base year-round, but especially during the holidays.
The 30th SFS uses the visitors center, gate security, patrolmen, military working dogs, the conservation unit, and the small unmanned aircraft system unit to maintain safety all around the base perimeter by checking identification cards, providing base surveillance and protection.
“Most of our base traffic comes through the main gate, but during the holidays we use all of our resources to the fullest,” said Senior Airman Oscar Rodriguez, 30th SFS patrolman. “Our patrols and base personnel are highly vigilant to bring safety to Vandenberg.”
The main gate, the Santa Maria gate, has constant traffic coming through. During the busy holiday season, it is no different with the increase of base passes.
“At the Santa Maria gate, we’re charged with making sure that we are properly letting people on base,” said Staff Sgt. Aaren Catchings, 30th SFS defense operations controller. “We’re also writing passes when the visitors center is closed so military members’ families can come on base and bring morale to those living on base during the holiday season.”
The Lompoc gate becomes a high trafficked area for commercial visitors delivering packages and goods on base.
“During the holidays, the Lompoc gate becomes a busy gate for those who drive commercial vehicles but also for those that drive RVs on base,” said Airman 1st Class Elijah Basil, 30th SFS response force leader. “Our job is to inspect every commercial vehicle, check their authorization to enter the base and ensure the security of the base.”
On Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, the visitors center will be closed. The Lompoc gate will be open on designated hours and the Santa Maria gate will be open 24 hours. Both gates will be handing out passes for those trying to gain base access with an approved sponsor, and all the while the 30th SFS will remain highly vigilant securing the base.
