MOSUL, Iraq — Capt. Joshua M. Sturgill assumed command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 130th Engineer Brigade in a change of command ceremony at Contingency Operating Site Marez, Mosul, Iraq, Oct. 31.

Passing the unit guidon to Cpt. Sturgill was outgoing commander, Capt. Holly Y. Grey, who served as HHC's commander since January 2008.

Capt. Grey successfully helped guide the brigade's headquarters company as the 130th uncased its colors and stood up in Hawaii. Eighteen months after Grey assumed command, the brigade headquarters deployed to Iraq to support engineering operations and reconstruction efforts in Multi-National Division-North.

"It's been an honor to deploy this company to Iraq and it is a privilege to remain here with you," Grey said to the company's officers, non-commissioned officers and Soldiers during the ceremony.

In her new assignment, Capt. Grey will assist with project management and key leader engagements conducted by the Mosul Reconstruction Cell, facilitating meetings between U.S. reconstruction assets, the Directorate Generals and the Provincial Governor. Capt. Grey's primary responsibility in the MRC will be reviewing projects and contracts to ensure compliance with U.S. and Government of Iraq specifications. This is her third deployment to Iraq.

Capt. Sturgill, a Houston, Texas, native, is also on his third deployment to Iraq. A six year Army veteran, his previous assignments include operations battle captain for the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd, Infantry Division and platoon leader and then executive officer with 18th Engineer Company, 3-2 SBCT.

"This is an important step for me as an officer. Company command is an significant opportunity and opens up doors for your career," Capt. Sturgill said. "It's the first job where you're given command authority, and the trust and responsibility placed on you is tremendous, especially in an environment like Iraq."

Capt. Sturgill views the challenges of company command in Iraq, especially in a headquarters unit where the majority of the officers outrank the company commander, as an important learning experience.

"Having a company with so many officers and senior NCOs will really test my interpersonal skills. Even with the Soldiers' vast experiences and multiple deployments, I still have to make sure required training gets done and the company supports the brigade commander and his staff," he said.
