National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Visits Naval Oceanography

Command, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography

Stennis Space Center, Miss. —— Naval Oceanography hosted Mr. James Griffith, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) Director, Source Operations and Management Directorate—along with other NGA personnel—for a detailed overview of Commander Naval Meteorology ad Oceanography Command (CNMOC) for operational briefs and in-person engagements with subject matter experts, Nov. 17, 2021.

The cohort toured various Naval Oceanography facilities with focus on Naval Oceanographic Office’s (NAVO) program offices, and operational equipment from Fleet Survey Team (FST) and Naval Oceanography Mine Warfare (NOMWC) used to collect data, then transformed into detailed, multispectral charts and maps by NGA.

“We learned so much about the important work that CNMOC does for our Navy and nation around the world,” said Mr. James Griffith, NGA Director, Source Operations and Management Directorate. “This visit further cements NGA benefits greatly from the strong partnership with CNMOC.”

Griffith acknowledges the partnership between NGA and CNMOC as symbiotic in its operational function, realized by both NGA and Naval Oceanography’s leadership.

“The partnership we [Naval Oceanography] have with NGA is one of our most important… we collect the data which NGA uses to update charts, ensuring safe maritime navigation,” said CDR Jen Landry, FST Commanding Officer. “This visit further strengthens our partnership as our Sailors and Civilians must to share innovative platforms and sensors we use to support Naval Oceanography’s mission.”

NGA analyzes and distributes information and data that depict physical features and geographically located occurrences on Earth, or geospatial intelligence (GEOINT).

U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command directs and oversees more than 2,500 globally-distributed military and civilian personnel who collect, process and exploit environmental information to assist Fleet and Joint Commanders in all warfare areas to make better decisions, based on assured environmental information, faster than the adversary.
