EBBING AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ark. - Chief Master Sergeant James W. Rivers, 123rd Intelligence Squadron, retired in a formal ceremony held here December 4, 2021.
Rivers celebrated more than 35 years of service with the Air Force and Air National Guard (ANG). He was joined by family, friends, as well as formal and current peers. The event was presided over by Lt. Col. Gregory Johnson, 189th mission support group deputy commander and former 123rd squadron commander.
“Chief, you’ve been the cornerstone in the 123rd for many years,” said Johnson. “Your leadership, your mentorship, and your attitude makes everyone around you a better person. I’m honored to know you
and to have served with you.”
Rivers’ enlisted in the Air Force in July 1986 as an Electronic Intelligence Operations Specialist supporting the 544th Intelligence Squadron at Offet Air Force Base, Neb. In 1992, he enlisted in the Arkansas Air National Guard
and cross-trained into imagery systems maintenance.
He served for 13 years as a traditional Guardsman in the 123 IS with deployments and annual training support to Howard Air Force Base, Panama. He also worked on the California ANG counter -drug program while working full-time as a Process Engineer at Kimberly Clark Corporation.
During his tenure, Rivers was awarded multiple distinguished titles and certifications such as; “Most Valuable Player,” Senior NCO of the year in 2007, Air Force ISRG Reserve NCO of the year, AFA “Guardsman of the Year” for the state of Arkansas, as well as Minuteman of the Year.
“These are the 6 P’s - the attributes that I feel helped me in my 35 years of military service,” stated Rivers. “Passion, pride, professionalism, personality, patience, and personal relationships. I leave this advice to my predecessor, I ask that you not be the next Chief Rivers, but that you strive to be the first You."
