CAMP CASEY, South Korea- The 210th Field Artillery Brigade and the People to People Dongducheon chapter held a kimchi making event at Camp Casey, South Korea on 8 December, 2021. The event’s purpose is to give help to those in need in the community while also helping soldiers get immersed in the Korean culture.
PTP is a Korean and U.S. friendly organization which organizes events to provide help to those in need in Korean communities. “This is a volunteer service that happens every December to deliver kimchi to people in need,” said An Mi Sook, the Secretary General of the PTP Dongducheon chapter, “I have been making kimchi every year with the U.S. Soldiers at Camp Casey.”
The event also helps strengthen the Korea-U.S. alliance and to give U.S. soldiers the chance to prepare Korea’s most popular and traditional food which is kimchi. “It is an extremely interesting experience making kimchi,” said Pvt. Nadir Bimbo from the 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 70th Brigade Support Battalion, “ When I go back home to the states I will try to make kimchi for my family.”
After the kimchi is made by the community members and U.S. Soldiers, it is boxed up and sent to the city hall or district office and will be delivered to community members in need. The community members receiving the kimchi are members with disabilities, single parent households, and elders who are living on their own. Each community member receiving kimchi will get a box weighing 4.3kg which can be eaten throughout the winter.
