    The Naval Surface Warfare, Center Philadelphia Division (NWSCPD) hosted a hybrid quarterly awards ceremony Nov. 2, 2021 to acknowledge and honor eligible employees for their federal career milestones, as well as those who received letters of appreciation for achievements in support of the fleet.

    The ceremony also recognized NSWCPD employees recently presented with 2021 Warfare Center Awards, a Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) award that honors employees for achievements in categories such as innovation, collaboration, technical support services, and knowledge sharing.

    Addressing employees attending both in-person and virtually, NSWCPD Commanding Officer Capt. Dana Simon stressed the importance of these awards in recognizing the vital contributions employees make to the fleet.

    “It’s a pleasure to see everyone out there and I appreciate your attendance today… For all our awardees I congratulate you!” said Simon, adding that the awards showed the diversity of what NSWCPD employees do to support the fleet and their sponsors.
    In total, the ceremony honored 66 employees, including:

    • Career Service (One with 40 years of service, five with 35 years of service, six with 30 years of service, and one with 25 years of service.

    • Scientist and Engineer Development Program (SEDP) graduates (13 awardees).

    • Warfare Center Award recipients including:

    o Qing Dong, Tracy Hannon, My Ly, TJ McKelvey, and Brian Rees were awarded the John C. Mickey Collaboration Award for collaborating between High Energy Laser (HEL) Power, Energy and Thermal Management Systems leading to the development of an integrated and federated set of models to represent power, energy, and thermal management systems for use within the HEL End-to-End overarching system model. Their work promoted efficiencies and enabled the on-time delivery of future ships.

    o Tania Teissonniere-Almodovar was awarded the Knowledge Sharing award for harnessing her technical expertise and highly developed knowledge sharing skills to lead a team of junior engineers to oversee the refurbishments of Sonar Dome Pressurization Systems and ensure operational readiness for the fleet. Under her tutelage, the team of novices accomplished five Sonar Dome Pressurization system evolutions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    o Twenty-nine members of NSWCPD’s Compatibility Test Facility Team won the Technical Support Services Award for executing and achieving major acquisition milestones. As members of this team they performed extended 24/7 testing operations during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, involving rapid adaptation and adoption of mitigating protocols to enable uninterrupted accomplishments of critical mission and schedule objectives.

    o Roger Guill was awarded the Technical Support Services Award for traveling to Brazil in the midst of travel restrictions, COVID testing, and quarantine requirements to assess facilities and address port concerns, while arranging a brief stop for a Virginia-class submarine, which had not been done before. He successfully addressed Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical issues, facilitated their resolution, and ensured active submarines maintained their intended tasking.

    • Michael Chytka and Michael Grubbs were awarded a letter of appreciation from Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Deputy Director for Undersea Warfare Rear Adm. Edward Anderson for their professionalism and dedication as NAVSEA Auditors in support of the Navy’s Submarine Safety, Deep Submergence Systems and Fly-By-Wire Ship Control Systems Programs managed by NAVSEA 07.

    • John Lodise was awarded a letter of recognition from NAVSEA Director of Marine Engineering Douglas E. Arnold for his professionalism and dedication in support of the logistical support, technical expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and tireless work to correct the issues with the Main Feedwater Control Valves on the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). He provided high-level engineering, logistical acumen, organization, and continuous support to ensure the ship was operational and remained on schedule to meet deployment needs.

    • Wade Schritter and Peter Shirley also were awarded a letter of appreciation from Arnold for their professionalism and dedication in providing outstanding support to USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). They provided exceptional logistical support, technical expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and tireless work to connect the issues with the Main Feedwater Control Valves on the LHD 7. They provided continuous support to ensure the ship was operational and on schedule to meet deployment needs.

    NSWCPD employs approximately 2,800 civilian engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel. The NSWCPD team does the research and development, test and evaluation, acquisition support, and in-service and logistics engineering for the non-nuclear machinery, ship machinery systems, and related equipment and material for Navy surface ships and submarines. NSWCPD is also the lead organization providing cybersecurity for all ship systems.
