    11th Armored Cavalry Regiment

On December 2nd, 2021, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment held its 4th annual Commander’s Cup, a fitness and athletics competition between teams fielded by the Squadrons to bolster morale and promote esprit de corps before the holiday block leave period. The fitness events included a five kilometer relay run, a six-mile ruck march, a Murph challenge, an obstacle course, and rowing and weightlifting competitions. The sports contests were softball, basketball, dodgeball, frisbee, ultimate football, and corn hole.

In conjunction with the Commander’s Cup awards ceremony, the Regiment held a Tree Lighting Ceremony at Wickam Park, named for Cpl. Jerry W. Wickam, who received the Medal of Honor posthumously for actions taken while serving with F Troop, 2nd Squadron, during the Vietnam War. The park is one of several locations within the Regiment’s footprint dedicated to the preservation of history. Maintenance Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, designed and built the 20 foot tall tree that formed the centerpiece of the park’s holiday makeover. Additional Squadrons and Troops within the Regiment decorated the armored vehicles and helicopters in the park.

“Whether you’re a tanker, an infantryman, someone who works in the personnel shop or the logistics shop, everybody does their job so that we are successful,” said Colonel Todd Hook, Regimental Commander, who spoke on the unit’s mission in the National Training Center and reputation across the rest of the Army before lighting the tree. “To the Soldiers, leaders, and families: take pride in your accomplishments, and thank you for what you do.”

At the conclusion of the event, Wickam Park was illuminated with a variety of holiday lights and 1st Squadron was awarded first place and custody of the Commander’s Cup. This is the third year in a row that 1st Squadron has held the trophy. 2nd Squadron won the trophy the year it was introduced, in 2018.
