PERRYSBURG, Ohio – Thomas Rojas, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio, received a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship worth $180,000, Dec. 6.

While the Navy awards thousands of NROTC scholarships every year, Rojas was awarded an Immediate Scholarship Reservation (ISR) scholarship. ISR scholarships are awarded by unit commanding officers and are only given to a select few applicants.

Cmdr. Paolo Singh, commanding officer of Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Heartland, awarded Ellis the scholarship after reviewing his application and conducting an in-person interview.

“We had a great discussion,” Singh said. “While there are certain requirements, such as academic, physical fitness and other eligibility requirements, the Navy wants our officers to be high character leaders. Thomas wants to serve his country for all the right reasons, and that is why he was an obvious choice for this scholarship.”

As commanding officer of NTAG Heartland, Singh has the authority to award four ISR scholarships to students in Michigan, Indiana and Northwest Ohio during this school year. Rojas is the fourth and final recipient.

“It means so much,” Rojas said. “It means I can serve my country, and I can help my country and my friends and family.”

Rojas is currently a senior at Perrysburg High School. He hopes to be accepted to Ohio State University. After he earns his degree, he will be commissioned as a Navy officer.

Rojas believes his personal drive and patriotism for country were significant factors that inspired him to work toward the goal of getting this scholarship. He also credits his family for getting him to this point.

“My dad inspired me a lot to want to pursue that degree of excellence,” he said.

Being selected for the ISR scholarship meant Rojas skipped the usual process where his application would be reviewed with thousands of other applicants by a board of officers.
