FORT CARSON, Colo. — As the 43rd Sustainment Brigade prepares its Soldiers and equipment for deployment next year, the brigade's leadership traveled to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., to take advantage of an important training opportunity.
The most junior to the most senior staff officers and non-commissioned officers in the 43rd SB joined Col. Edward Daly, the brigade commander, to attend the Battle Command Seminar Aug. 31 - Sept. 3.
The training event provided staff leaders the opportunity to gather in the same room without the distractions of the garrison mission to conduct a realistic assessment of the support unit's combat readiness, said Lt. Col. Noah Hutcher, deputy commander, 43rd SB.
"It was a chance to get true integration with the full range of the brigade staff," said Hutcher. "We brought in subject matter experts and were able to get a lot of information and idea sharing done to really learn about our deployed area of responsibilities."
The brigade leadership discussed in length topics ranging from the military decision making process and knowledge management; to information operations and Improvised Explosive Device training; to new methods for improving supply distribution and operations.
"I thought the most beneficial information I received at the Battle Command Seminar was learning about [Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan's] Counterinsurgency Guidance, and what he believes the U.S. forces need to do to win the war in Afghanistan," said Master Sgt. Steven Patterson, future operations NCO, 43rd SB.
Patterson said the staff benefited having the brigade commander at the training event to provide guidance and reinforce areas of operations necessary for the success of the 43rd SB and its mission while forward deployed.
Retired Gen. James T. Hill, senior mentor, Battle Command Training Program, congratulated Daly and his staff for the meaningful group discussions and participation during the seminar.
Hill also recognized the brigade staff for its demonstrated expertise displayed during the group discussions and the team cohesion evident throughout the seminar.
The brigade's staff also used the trip to Fort Leavenworth for a bit of professional development with a visit to the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial, Kansas City, Mo., where the staff took a special tour of the exhibits to learn about the U.S. Army logistical operations during the first worldwide conflict.
The staff learned how difficult it was for the early logisticians to move tons of equipment using ports in the United States to send weapons, uniforms, food and personnel to the battlefields in Europe.
The completion of the seminar marked another major milestone for the brigade as it continues to conduct major training events in preparation for future deployments, said Hutcher.
