Fourth Wave – New Corona Decisions

Hessen's Minister President Bouffier and Social Affairs Minister Klose have commented on the decisions of the Minister Presidents' Conference and their effects on Hessen.

Hessen's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier said after today's meeting of the Hessen Corona Cabinet: "The measures introduced in November are working, the infection numbers are currently going down. We are in the process of catching the fourth wave of the pandemic. However, despite these successes, we must already do everything we can to contain the upcoming fifth wave. The situation remains serious and is getting more serious with the Omikron variant. We need to be even more consistent. That is why the federal and state governments decided on further restrictions at the Ministers Presidents' Conference. The main focus is on stricter contact restrictions and further efforts to close the large vaccination gap."

Bouffier explained that further data on Omikron was needed. For this reason, the Minister Presidents will again agree on further measures as early as Jan. 7. By then, the Expert Council will have submitted a new report.

    Vaccination campaign must continue

The head of government and Minister of Social Affairs Kai Klose urgently appealed to all citizens in Hessen to be vaccinated and called it "right" that the federal and state governments have agreed on a "consistent" continuation of the vaccination campaign.

The basic prerequisite is the sufficient vaccine inflow to be ensured by the federal government. "In recent weeks, we have massively expanded our vaccination capacities in a huge effort by the Hessen Vaccine Alliance of Doctors and Pharmacists as well as the public health service and have once again significantly exceeded the self-imposed target of 400,000 vaccinations per week with over 550,000 vaccinations," said Health Minister Kai Klose. Numerous doctors' surgeries and vaccination centers of the public health service will continue to vaccinate over Christmas and New Year’s.

Furthermore, the head of government and the minister called for additional testing regardless of vaccination status, for example before personal meetings, in order to exercise "maximum caution". This applies "especially during the Christmas days" and especially when meeting with vulnerable people. "Also please adhere to the the applicable rules on distance, hygiene and masks over the holidays".

Bouffier concluded by stressing that many points from the MPK decision had already been implemented in Hessen. Already in mid-December, the Hessen state parliament had taken a decision in order to be able to take further measures if the pandemic situation required it.

    What's new in Hessen?

(On the basis of the resolutions of the MPK of Dec. 21, 2021 and the adaptation of the Corona Ordinance of Hessen of Dec. 22, 2021)

    Contact Restrictions

Further tightening of the contact restriction in public spaces to groups of a maximum of 10 people.

If there are unvaccinated or non-recovered people present, meetings can only be between one’s own household and a maximum of two people of another household. Exceptions apply to children and adolescents under the age of 14 and to persons who cannot be vaccinated. In the private sector, the urgent recommendation remains to limit the number of contacts.

    - Hessen recommends tests before personal meetings.
    - The operation of dance halls, clubs and discotheques is now prohibited nationwide and regardless of the incidence of infection on site. A regular catering business is possible there.
    - The upper limit for all events will be 250 participants. This regulation applies to both indoor and outdoor areas.

The new measures will apply from Dec. 28, 2021 and will run until Jan. 13, 2022.
