The Paraglide is Fort Bragg’s premier source for information.

This January is an exciting time to be at Fort Bragg. We are responding to customer demands with solutions. In this article, I’d like to highlight new traffic lights, road repairs and the opening of Liberty Park.

Right before the New Year and prior to schedule, the Directorate of Public Works activated temporary traffic lights at the Chicken Road and MacRidge Road intersection. These lights are the first step towards addressing the increased traffic in this area due to the expansion of our Special Forces community in the new Yarborough Complex. The lights are already helping traffic move more smoothly and will remain in place as the entire intersection receives needed expansion this year.

The changing temperatures and the sandy soil in our area make road maintenance a challenge. In addition, we have extra wear and tear due to the larger and heavier tactical vehicles that units drive across the installation on a daily basis. This unfortunately has left Fort Bragg roads in disrepair.

Starting this month, however, we will begin to see major repairs on Fort Bragg roads for the first time in several years. Over the past six years, we have been working through both state and federal bureaucracy in order to enter into a partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This partnership will significantly reduce road repair and replacement costs.

In the meantime, continue to call 910-396-0321 and report potholes and other required road repairs. Make sure to describe the roads and intersections where repairs are needed along with a rough description of the depth and width of the pothole. I want to keep our DPW pothole team busy all month. This team is amazing and typically responds to a service order within a week.

Fort Bragg has 1,142 miles of surfaced roads, more than any other base. We need all the help we can get to spot potholes and get them filled. If you know of a pothole or other required road repair please call the above number. Reporting a pothole typically takes just five minutes.

In 2020, the Chief of Staff of the Army instituted the Army’s People Strategy focusing on improving the quality of life programs and initiatives. Through this strategy, Fort Bragg has received millions of dollars in order to execute barracks renovations and child care expansion.

In addition, we know that beautiful parks and trails enhance quality of life. Therefore, we are in the process of creating several new parks and recreational trails on Fort Bragg as part of an overarching multi-year plan to enhance the appearance of Fort Bragg.

As part of this process, we are excited to announce that Liberty Park will open Jan. 19! The park utilizes the section of Bragg Boulevard that was vacated to construct the Murchison Road Bypass. It has 3.4 miles of paved trails lined with new trees and wildflower groves. In addition, it has 2.8 miles of unpaved trails that move through pine forests and indigenous meadows. The park will also have 25 physical fitness stations and four family pavilions for Families and Soldiers to enjoy.

Plus, Liberty Park will be the centerpiece of the planned 14.1-mile Liberty Trail, which will loop around the installation. The new trail will connect the various parks and trail systems that exist within the Fort Bragg cantonment area. Runners can experience it firsthand on Mar. 27. The Fort Bragg Half-Marathon will generally follow the route of Liberty Trail.

The park and trail are named “Liberty” because that’s a name that unites the installation and the community. The Special Forces have the Latin form of Liberty in their motto: “De Oppresso Liber” and the 82nd Airborne Division has Liberty in the first verse of the All American Song, “We’re All-American and proud to be; For we’re the Soldiers of Liberty.” But most of all, Liberty Park and Trail are named after the string of towns and villages that the U.S. Army liberated in France in 1944 as they moved from Omaha Beach to Bastogne.

The park will go a long ways towards improving the overall appearance of East Bragg and improving the footprint for the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command and the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade. The park and the new recreational trail will enhance quality of life for our Soldiers, Families and guests. We are proud to offer this space to the Fort Bragg community.

Our Soldiers, Veterans and Families deserve the very best we can offer. Our professionals in the garrison get fulfillment from improving the installation and making quality of life just a little better every day.

I hope that you all had a great holiday season and welcome to 2022!
