    Story by Maj. Jean Kratzer

    Headquarters, 42nd Infantry Division

One hundred and twenty Army and Air National Guard Soldiers and Airmen put their endurance and strength to the test during the National Guard’s All Guard Endurance Team competition in Austin, Texas on Jan. 15.

The Guard members, coming from 35 states and territories, were competing for 42 male and 17 female slots on the team.

Two California Army National Guard members took top honors in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Major Robert Killian, a Special Forces Soldier who has won the Army’s Best Ranger competition twice and Spartan World Championship obstacle race, finished first in the men’s category.

Major Samantha Wood, an ultra-marathoner, and physical therapist assigned to California’s Joint Force Headquarters, finished first among the women.

The All Guard Endurance Team began as an idea to expand the existing National Guard Marathon Program, which promotes the Army and Air National Guard both locally and nationally while bolstering the National Guard Retention Program by instilling physical fitness, self-discipline, and esprit de corps among National Guard members.

The competition revolves around using ten exercise machines designed by Spartan, a company which hosts competitive marathon and fitness events.

The event was based on age group, gender, and time the service members took to complete ten zone events. Before getting on the machines, each athlete ran 500-meters, the equivalent of a 5K run.

The event was held indoors at the Austin Convention Center.

The system is known as DEKAFIT, from the Greek work for ten. Each machine tests endurance and strength in different ways.

“Really what this competition showed me regardless of your fitness level….you’re competing against yourself… you’re showing excellence and going above and beyond,” said Brig. Gen. Michael Oster, the Assistant Adjutant General for the South Dakota National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters.

Oster, who was the keynote speaker at the event awards ceremony said that the competition” makes you feel good about who you are and it makes you feel good about what you do.”

“You get camaraderie and teamwork in this while participating,” he added.

The competitors ranged from elite athletes to first-time participants.

Most of the competitors have been training for the new Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), which emphasizes agility and strength. This competition provided new challenges with obstacles and more running.

According to the Spartan, the goal is to create an inclusive race that is empowering and allows for every person to "earn their mark" by completing the race. The zones are:

    • ZONE 1 - RAM Alt Reverse Lunge
    • ZONE 2 - 500M Row
    • ZONE 3 - 24" Box Jump / Step Overs
    • ZONE 4 - Med Ball Sit Up
    • ZONE 5 - 500M Ski Erg
    • ZONE 6 - 100M Farmer's Carry
    • ZONE 7 - 25 kcal Air Bike
    • ZONE 8 - Dead/Slam Ball Shoulder Over
    • ZONE 9 - 100M Tank Push/Pull
    • ZONE 10 - RAM Burpees

The event's overall intent is to demonstrate a favorable opinion of physical fitness and promote holistic health and wellness across the National Guard force, according to Sgt. 1st Class Douglas Stephens, the National Guard’s Military Competitions Coordinator.

Another goal for this event is to reach potential recruits for the National Guard by having Guard members compete visibly in these kinds of athletic events.

The 59 winners, and the top three men and women in the masters (over 50) will represent the All Guard Team for the next two years.

Typically the team will hold six events per year to spread the message of the National Guard and enhance recruiting efforts.

It opens up the door to talk to people at every venue,” Stephens said.

“We have so many cool stories on the team. We have a guy that was in a car wreck and was told he would never walk again and now he’s running marathons. So he gets to tell that story at every race and it encourages people to join,” Stephens said.

“The retention is so high, people work hard to get on the team and then they don’t ever want to stop competing. They will work themselves harder and harder each day to be a part of this program,” he added.

“This is all about excellence, everybody I talked to today wanted to run a better time than they ran the last time or the last workout they did before they came here,” according to Oster.

The events guest speaker, Yancy Culp, a veteran of these high intensity fitness events since 2011, told the competitors that fitness is vital.
Culp, who served four years in the Navy, is a coach in the sport of obstacle coach racing.

“When you do not have fitness in your day to day routines you’re cheating yourself. All of you are on a great fitness journey each and every one of you, we created this event for you to excel at,” Culp said.
