“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

FORT BENNING, GA - On Jan 17, a new batch of WHINSEC instructors began their formal training at the Common Faculty Development Instructor Course (CFDIC), here at the Institute.

Under the responsibility of the Institute's Center for Faculty and Staff Development, CFDIC uses TRADOC Pamphlet 525-8-2, TRADOC Regulation 350-70 and the Experiential Learning Model as their base for instruction. During the two-week course, students learn how to teach, train, and facilitate learning in an adult environment. The course introduces new instructors to classroom management techniques, the process for building learning objectives, lesson plans, and effective communications techniques. This is considered Phase 1, Fundamentals.

During this phase, students learn about the theories of fundamentals of adult teaching and learning; applied critical thinking (ACT) and group thinking mitigation (GTM); and instructor as a professional. Within those areas, the experiential learning model, direct instruction, and collaborative instruction are introduced to the students. As part of each section, tutorials and check-on-learning presentations are conducted to evaluate the progress of the candidates.

Upon completion of the formal training, graduates return to their respective schools/ centers/ sections where they prepare themselves to facilitate classes. During Phase 2, Technical, they are internally evaluated by their fellow section instructors. Once they receive successful evaluations, they are considered to have completed Phase 2 Technical. Then they are evaluated externally by the Center for Faculty & Staff Development. Upon completion, they attain Phase 3, Certification, and the Army Basic Level Instructor qualification.

Additionally, students receive instruction on Ethics, Democracy, and Human Rights, the Rule of Law Process, Civilian Control of the Military, and the Role of the Military in a Democratic Society within the framework of the Profession of Arms.
