    JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. –

A group of Afghan guests at Liberty Village on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst received scholarships to attend Bard University in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. All of the Afghan guests will become students and begin attending classes at each school in January 2022.

“I’ve been raised in a family where education is a priority,” said one future Bard University student. “I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to getting my degree in business.”

Many of the guests who received the scholarships had already been going to school while in Afghanistan.

“Back in Afghanistan, I was a sophomore attending the American University of Afghanistan,” said one guest. “I’ve always had a passion for robotics and there were never any real opportunities to pursue that back in Afghanistan. I will be studying computer science while here and I'm very excited about it.”

Many of the guests who received the scholarships said their family values were heavy influences in their decision to further their education.

“Like my father used to say, if you don’t have ten bucks in your pocket, you can never give someone ten bucks,” said one scholarship recipient. “So my main goal is to get those skills and other things I need through school to have the ability to help others.”

Task Force Liberty personnel who enabled the students' transition made comments on how promising their futures will be.

“These are some of the brightest people I've ever interacted with,” said Capt. Ronald Miller, a cultural advisor with Task Force Liberty. “There’s no doubt these men and women are going to be successful in America and in their future communities.”

The guests expressed how close they’ve gotten to their fellow scholarship recipients throughout the process.

“This whole experience has had many different challenges but we’ve gotten through it together almost like a family,” said one future student. “We have each other and we support each other through the good and bad times.”

The efforts of Task Force-Liberty, Department of State, and it’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) assured each individual to local resettlement agencies near the schools and ensured continuity of care and support during the immigration and resettlement process.
