NORFOLK, Va. – The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) recently announced their Sailors of the Year.
Sailor of the year awards recognize exemplary Sailors who stand out among their peers for their performance, initiative, and spirit of service.
“Our Sailors’ hard work to return George Herbert Walker Bush to the operational fleet in 2021 was exemplary,” said Capt. Robert Aguilar, GHWB commanding officer. “They represent the best principles of service to the mission and the nation that our namesake, President George H.W. Bush, embodied.”
The 2021 George H.W. Bush Sailors of the Year are:
Senior Sailor of the Year: Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 1st Class Jose Mercado from Dorado, Puerto Rico; Air Department.
Sailor of the Year: Damage Controlman 2nd Class Chase Purdue from Sutter Creek, California; Engineering Department.
Junior Sailor of the Year: Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Daesha Anderson Sills from St. Louis, Missouri; Air Department.
Blue Jacket of the Year: Logistics Specialist Seaman Aaron Spak from Deerfield, Illinois; Deck Department.
Mercado will move on to compete for Sailor of the Year honors for Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic (CNAL).
