The historic 56th Artillery Command was reactivated on November 8, 2021, and will be operating out of Mainz-Kastel, Germany. The mission of the 56th Artillery Command is to plan and coordinate the employment of multi-domain fires and effects in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa and potentially a Combined Joint Force Land Component Command, if called to do so. The unit's command team consists of Maj. Gen. Stephen J. Maranian, Commanding General, 56th Artillery Command, and Command Sgt. Maj. Darrell Walls.

On January 11-13, 2022, Maj. Gen. Maranian had the opportunity to speak about the unit’s capabilities at the International Fires Warfighter Forum-Europe in Wiesbaden, Germany. The conference featured senior leaders from around the theater, all speaking on their specific interoperability and capabilities in the realm of the modernization of fires and effects.

“I believe the activation of the 56th will improve the readiness and multinational interoperability of our alliance and partner artillery formations, by the continued integration and synchronization of joint and multinational fires in theater exercises and operations,” Maranian said.

Throughout the presentation Maranian spoke on three specific elements in which the 56th Artillery Command can improve interoperability within the European Theater. These elements include technical expertise, procedural processes and the most important being human to human or nation to nation interoperability.

“Our personal relationships are a strategic strength of our Alliance,” Maranian said. “The relevance to the Fires enterprise in the theater cannot be overstated. The ability to work together and have successful communication between elements stems from the relationships we have cultivated, and I will make this a priority for my command as well as for me personally.”

The presentation also touched on another critical aspect of emphasis for U.S. Army, Modernization. The Army Modernization Strategy describes how the Army will transform into a multi-domain force by 2035, meet its enduring responsibility as part of the Joint Force to provide for the defense of the United States, and retain its position as the globally dominant land power. The Multi-Domain Operations concept details how the Army will support the Joint Force in the rapid and continuous integration of all domains of warfare – land, sea, air, space,
and cyberspace – to deter and prevail as we compete short of conflict, and fight and win if
    deterrence fails.

“Modernizing equipment is essential to our planning efforts, but so too is the modernization of operational command and control,” Maranian said. “The 56th Artillery Command is active today because of the US Army’s desire to modernize the way we do business.”

Long Range Precision Fires is one of the critical priorities for U.S. Army modernization. The activation of the 56th Artillery Command will play a large role in this effort as it will be the command and control node for ground fires in the European theater.

“As our armies modernize, it is imperative that we continue to share and engage with one another to enhance defense cooperation and increase interoperability,” Maranian stated to close out the 56th Artillery Command presentation.
