Tyndall Air Force Base has a robust recycling program for those affiliated with the base. The recycling center encourages materials to be brought in from home in lieu of not having an active recycling center in the local community, though recycled materials will not be reimbursed.
To help make recycling materials easier, collection containers are stationed in more than 20 locations across the installation, with plans for more to follow within the next few years.
“The recycling containers are [placed] in strategic locations based on product generation,” said Bob Myers, 325th Force Support Squadron recycling property disposal officer. “[Locations include] the Silver Flag [complex], Air Force Research Laboratory area and at the family campground.”
Myers, who has been operating the recycling center since late 1999 to present day, appreciates seeing the impact it has on the base and community.
“I enjoy providing a service for the folks on Tyndall and helping to protect our environment by keeping recyclables out of the landfills,” said Myers.
The collection containers are monitored and are emptied as needed.
“Myself and two employees check all the trailers on a daily basis and bring them back to the recycling center for processing as they fill up,” said Myers. “The recyclables are separated and processed. There are several vendors that purchase the materials.”
The funds generated from commodity sales are used for operating and program costs. This makes this mission unique as it is mostly self-funded and utilizes only a small amount of Air Force funding.
The program is co-operated by both the 325th FSS and the 325th Civil Engineer Squadron. While the overall program, is owned by the 325th CES, the practical side and day-to-day operations are sourced from the 325th FSS.
“The 325th CES environmental element promotes pollution prevention and resource conservation throughout the installation,” said Jennifer Brown, 325th CES recycling program manager. “By diverting as much solid waste from disposal in landfills, we are supporting those conservation goals and the Air Force’s sustainability mission.”
The Air Force continues to support environmental initiatives to reduce solid waste by encouraging Airmen, families, civilians, and contractors to recycle which facilitates the Air Force's sustainability mission.
