When a fire truck or police vehicle breaks down at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, a team of in-house mechanics are on the ready to get them moving again.
These specialists are members of the 78th Logistics Readiness Vehicle Management Flight.
“As each vehicle comes in from start to finish, we oversee it,” said Jerald Stork, 78th LGRV lead contracting officer representative. “We do monthly reports to show they (contracted mechanics) are doing the job according to what is needed. If it has a motor and wheels, we fix it.”
The Vehicle Management Flight is the single authority and source for maintenance and management of the installation's motor vehicle fleet, which is valued at more than $100 million. The motor fleet includes vehicles such as aircraft refuellers, tactical vehicles, forklifts, cranes, excavators, aircraft loaders, and more.
These team members are not only tasked with making sure repairs are timely, but also keeping a record of warranty repairs, developing short and long term maintenance schedules and keeping track of vehicle historical data.
“We make sure the Air Force is getting the most use out of each and every vehicle,” said Mitchell Moody, 78th LGRV Vehicle Management Flight chief. “Anything vehicle wise you could possibly think of we are responsible for – where they are, how they’re being utilized, or making sure the right vehicle is assigned to the right place for the right job. That’s what we do as fleet management.”
The 78th LRS offers a wide spectrum of services related to Robins’ overall logistics plans related to vehicles, cargo and passenger movement, supply, equipment, fuels, munitions, personal property, deployment planning and operations, support agreements, and war reserve materiel.
The squadron's strategic goals are to support the warfighter, develop its people, and provide the most cost-effective, timely and flexible logistics support possible.
The team is a combination of Airmen and civil service workers.
“Without us, you don’t roll,” he continued. “We keep Robins moving when it comes to vehicles. Logistics readiness is a big function, so without LRS there are a lot of things that won’t happen on base, and vehicles are just a part of that.”
