    By Sgt. Rashad Mohammed

FORT CAMPBELL, KY — In order to give Soldiers a better understanding on how to assist in Human Intelligence operations, the HUMINT platoon of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team's military intelligence company has been conducting training for designated Soldiers of the Strike Brigade's maneuver units to better prepare them for any future combat deployments.

The Soldiers, who were picked work in their unit's intelligence fusion cells, are taught the best methods of collecting and reporting information, and how to properly question informants and handle detainees. proper questioning of informants and the handling of detainees. Spc. Daniel Anthony, Alpha Troop 1-75 Cavalry Squadron, stated

"The class goes in depth in regards to the handling of detainees and informants," said Spc. Daniel Anthony, Troop A, 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd BCT. "It teaches how to properly question informants."

During the training, they met with "notional" informants and focused on how to properly type up their reports.

"I think it is very important to train maneuver units on HUMINT operations in order to better utilize HUMINT teams in this fast breaking asymmetric theater of operations in which we currently find ourselves," said Sgt. Brooks Bojanowski, an instructor with Company B, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion.

The instructors dressed in modern Middle Eastern attire and portrayed the role of informants. Being that there are limited numbers of HUMINT collectors in the Brigade, the hope is that through training of Soldiers, HUMINT operations can be expanded to cover a larger area of operation.

"This training has taught me how to properly collect and report information, so that it is easier for the HUMINT collection teams to disseminate to higher echelons," said Spc. Joshua Talbert, Troop A, 1-75th Cav. Regt.

The training also focused on the tactical questioning of detainees. Many combat arms' Soldiers may not have the proper training on the procedures of detainee operations, but through numerous deployments have an understanding of how the questioning may work. During the course of the training, Soldiers were taught how to process and properly handle detainees in accordance with the laws of the Geneva Convention.

"This training has taught me the proper ways to treat and question detainees. Before this training, I was very unsure of how to handle and treat detainees," said Pfc. Roxana Hernandez, with Co. D, 1-75th Cav. Regt. "There was always a lot of confusion."

The goal of the training is to familiarize the maneuver units with the knowledge of HUMINT operations and prepare them on in assisting trained collectors in the gathering of intelligence. More often than not, maneuver units will make first contact with informants and detainees and now they can apply what they learn in the course and implement it into their unit Standard Operating Procedures.
