FORT CARSON, Colo. - Combative Troop School Program is a part of the Modern Army Combatives Program. The program enhances Soldiers’ personal courage, confidence and resiliency during close quarter combat. It builds their situational responsiveness when in the operational environment.
Staff Sgt. Jacob A. Grove, the Fort Carson Combative Troop School Program lead, with Ready Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 4th Infantry Division has an extensive martial arts background to include a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
“I have been training Brazilian jiu-jitsu since I was a kid,” said Grove. “It's just something that I'm passionate about.”
Grove isn’t the only one who has a passion for hand-to-hand combat training.
Sgt. Cody Thompson, a motor transportation operator and combative assistant instructor, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Inf. Div. fell in love with combative back in 2014 when he was first introduced to the sport.
“Combatives is important to the military, no matter what branch,” Thompson said. “What are you going to do when the enemy closes distance with you or vice versa? We have to address all possible threats.”
The combative program was put on hold due to Covid-19. Soldiers who joined during Covid-19 didn’t have the opportunity to receive combatives training during basic combat training. With the combative operations opening back up Soldiers will be able to learn and enhance their combat skills.
Grove and Thompson will hold two certification programs. Level one is a one-week course for Soldiers to learn the basics of combative skills. Level two is a two-week course that allows the Soldier to focus on the tactical portion of their combative skills. Level three is a four-week masters training course. The course takes place at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Each class will have a maximum capacity of 12 Soldiers. Although, the instructors’ welcome walk-ins, they recommend signing up for the classes in Army Training Requirements and Resources System (ATRRS).
"I'm very excited for this program to start. I feel like a lot of Soldiers have been hungry to do combatives again," Thompson said.
The launch date is yet to be determined; contact your school NCO for more information on class dates.
