FORT STEWART, Ga. – The "Can Do Battalion," 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, conducted an assumption of command ceremony for its incoming commander Lt. Col. Brian Montgomery on March 2 at Cache Garden on Fort Stewart. Montgomery is a native of Roswell, Georgia, who enlisted in the Army in 1997. He commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 2004.
“We are excited to welcome you back as both Marne and China [3rd Bn., 15th IR] alumni," said Col. Terry R. Tillis, commander of the "Spartan Brigade," 2nd ABCT, 3rd ID. "You come to us with a tremendous reputation. You possess the warrior spirit, you demonstrated the ability to move to the sound of guns, and identify risk to mitigate and not avoid it. You are the right person for this command.”
Not long after graduating West Point, Montgomery, completed the Infantry Officer Basic Course and the U.S. Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Then Montgomery moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for his first assignment where he served as a rifle platoon leader and company executive officer for the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He also served as the battalion logistics officer and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Upon graduating from the Maneuver Captains Career Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, Montgomery returned to the 2nd Bn., 325th AIR, 82nd ABN DIV, where he served as the battalion assistant operations officer before assuming command of Alpha Company, 2nd Bn., 325th AIR, in 2009.
After command, Montgomery went back to West Point as an instructor in the Department of Behavioral Science and Leadership.
Montgomery graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 2015 and upon graduating served as the battalion executive officer for 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, at Fort Stewart. His next assignments included the brigade operations officer for the 188th Infantry Brigade, First Army, and serving as the U.S. Army Central Command Readiness and Central Asia/South Asia Exercise Branch Chief at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. Montgomery's most recent assignment since 2019 was the Eagle Battalion Professor of Military Science at Georgia Southern University, in Statesboro, Georgia.
He is grateful for those who helped him throughout his career. He said “To those I have had the honor to serve with, mentors, extended family, and friends, thank you for your support and guidance. It has helped shape me into the leader I am today."
Montgomery is committed to continue a legacy of success and determination in the Can Do Battalion. The battalion won best battalion during Marne Week in November 2021 and swept the brigade Iron Spartan competition in December 2021, all accomplishments Montgomery recognized.
“To the Soldiers and Families of the Can Do Battalion, it has been great to watch your accomplishments over the past couple of years," said Montgomery. "We [the Montgomery family] are excited to serve alongside you once again."
Montgomery takes command with the support of his wife and two children.
