Hancock Field Air National Guard Base, New York --
Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud and Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation, Mike Haynie visited the 174th Attack Wing at Hancock Air National Guard base on Feb. 17, 2022.
The purpose of the visit was for the Syracuse University team to gain a better understanding of what the wing’s mission, capabilities and key accomplishments. The visit is part of the partnership between Hancock Field and Syracuse University.
174th Attack Wing Commander, Col. William McCrink III started the visit by providing a mission update and then proceeded with a tour of the base.
Accompanying the chancellors, was their team of SU academic advisors.
“Our partnership with the 174th Attack Wing effectively opens Syracuse University to wing members and their families through part-time online and on campus study,” said Dr. Mike Frasciello, dean of the College of Professional Studies.
The first tour stop was the 174th Field Training Detachment. Chief Master Sgt. Ian Tucker, the senior enlisted leader, led the group through the FTD and explained how it provides MQ-9 Reaper maintenance training for the Air National Guard, Air Force and international students.
“We’re thrilled about the new base partnership with SU and appreciated the opportunity to showcase our detachment training facilities to the chancellor and his team,” Tucker said.
The last stop on the tour was the 174th Operations Group. Group Airmen spoke about how they provide in-garrison or deployed combat ready crew, support personnel and equipment to combatant commanders to meet the goals of the Air National Guard and Air Combat Command.
“Showcasing the men and women of the 174th Operations Group accomplishing the mission is one of my favorite duties as a leader,” said Col. Thomas Burke, the 174th Operations Group commander. “Educating our local partners on our daily operations enhances our integration within the community," he added.
What was previously known as Columbia College will now be known as the Syracuse University building.
“The wing leadership’s commitment to developing and retaining well-educated, future-facing Airmen is consistent with our commitment to opening opportunities and enhancing affordability for all members of the wing who aspire to earn a Syracuse University degree,” Frasciello said.
Syracuse University advisors will be on base every Tuesday and Thursday. This will give members a chance to be able to sit down and speak with them in person to ask any questions that they may have regarding anything pertaining to taking classes at SU.
Classes will start online, and then they’ll work towards possibly having classes every week.
