AMMAN, Jordan - U.S. service members from Special Operations Joint Task Force - Levant oversaw the delivery of medical equipment valued at an estimated $1.2 million for the hospital in Ramtha, Jordan Feb 20, 2022.

The northern Jordan area has had a large influx of refugees over the last 10 years, which has put strains on the medical infrastructure in the area. The delivery of the MRI machine is an Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster Assistance and Civic Aid (OHDACA) project conducted in partnership with the Ramtha Government Hospital and Jordanian Ministry of Health. The SOJTF-L Civil Military Support Element (CMSE) team, alongside the U.S. Embassy-Jordan are responsible for delivering the machine.

"This project is a representation of the strong partnership between the U.S. and Jordan," said Brigadier General Isaac Peltier, Commander of Special Operations Joint Task Force – Levant. "The MRI machine will enhance the medical capabilities of the northern Jordan area, providing regional medical partners with the ability to improve lives for thousands of Jordanians."

OHDACA programs support U.S. military forces by maintaining a robust overseas presence aimed at shaping the international security environment, strengthening friends and allies, and promoting peace and stability in the region as well as being able to effectively respond when called upon during natural or manmade humanitarian disasters.

"Not all communities in northern Jordan have easy access to this kind of equipment," said Army Capt. John Wirges, CMSE-Jordan Team Leader. "It provides the Jordanians a more enhanced capability to help diagnose and provide lifesaving treatment to a wide variety of people, both Jordanians and Syrian refugees in the area."

The benefit of this MRI machine is multifaceted. Not only will the equipment help the people of the community, the contribution also strengthens the relationship between nations.

"We consider the relationship between the Jordanian people and the United States as a historic, strong and deep relationship. The foundation in this relationship is a common interest for both countries," said Tayel Al-Majali, Ramtha District Director. "This is evidence of the great relationship and everything we have been working on at multiple levels of the government."

Although several major central cities in Jordan have medical capabilities to treat many life threatening conditions, the MRI machine will impact the Ramtha medical community by improving the healthcare professional’s ability to diagnose a variety of conditions that are difficult to achieve with traditional methods.

"There was a lack of this type of service to the local communities, and the need for this MRI machine came out of this partnership," said Hussein Abu Al-Shieh, former mayor. "[CSME teams] were very transparent and listened to us, and this came out of this partnership."

"The people in local community always ask about tangible accomplishments and now we can relay this to them," Hussein Abu Al-Shieh continued. "Thank you and thank everyone that was a part of this to make it a reality."

The U.S.-Jordanian partnership, built over seven decades, is stronger than ever and we will continue to work with our Jordanian partners on many issues affecting Jordanians, to include meeting healthcare challenges.

"This MRI machine has been a long time coming and several of our teams that have been a part of this process," said Wirges. "I truly hope this provides the Jordanian people with an enhanced ability to treat patients."

Jordan is a close friend, invaluable ally, and an essential strategic partner on a range of shared concerns and challenges throughout the region. Our close cooperation on security issues is unparalleled in the Arab world and has helped keep Jordanians and Americans safer.
