There are a number of programs on Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina, designed to alleviate stress for active duty military families. One such resource is the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), which offers specialized help to dependents that have medical, educational or behavioral needs.
“The more stress we can take off of the military member, the more prepared they are to fulfill their duties,” said Byron Honore, EFMP program manager.
Once a family receives orders to MCAS Cherry Point and is identified as having a possible candidate for the EFMP, the dependent is screened by Headquarters Marine Corps EFMP to ensure the family’s needs can be met here. Afterwards, EFMP connects the family with local resources that can help with their specific needs.
Case management services are also offered to families, which advocate on behalf of the family member. Its mission is to give them the knowledge and resources needed to self-advocate.
“A big part of the EFMP is to help empower the family to advocate for themselves for their needs that they have,” Honore said.
Additionally, families are given access to a library of books that can help them better understand their family member’s needs. Topics include autism, ADHD, depression, anxiety and how to best utilize Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
The program also offers a variety of activities for those who use EFMP services, including a sensory movie night streamed at Twin Rivers Theater. The sensory movie night allows children to watch a movie with reduced noise and dimmed lights so they can still play.
