According to the National Athletic Trainers Organization, “National Athletic Training Month is held every March in order to spread awareness about the important work of athletic trainers.” This month we are taking time to recognize athletic trainers assigned to Marine Corps units and the work they do treating, preventing, and rehabilitating our Marine’s injuries.
Akemi Raish and Valentina Bustamante are athletic trainers with III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group (III MIG). Raish and Bustamante hold rehabilitation sessions every Tuesday and Thursday on Camp Hansen, with the goal of targeting causes of potential injuries and stopping them before they become serious.
“My favorite part of being an athletic trainer is being able to get out and do the training, such as hikes with the Marines so we have a better understanding of what they go through,” said Raish.
In addition to conducting rehabilitation sessions for Marines and Sailors, Raish and Bustamante also help train the corpsmen of III MIG on methods to prevent Marines from being injured.
Raish and Bustamante held a class earlier this month for corpsmen with III MIG to demonstrate how to properly wrap ankles. Chief Petty Officer Hector Becerrilmora, the lead chief petty officer for the corpsmen with III Marine Expeditionary Force Support Battalion, III MIG, attended the class alongside other corpsmen.
“The training is important because the Marines we work with undergo rigorous training which could cause injuries to the lower extremities,” he said, “By having this training, we will be able to help prevent that from happening in the future.”
