    U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden

WIESBADEN, GERMANY – Monday a team of Military Police from U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Directorate of Emergency Services taught a group of fourth and fifth graders at Aukamm Elementary School the importance of stomping out bullying.

The class was inspired by “Not in Our School,” a nationwide program in the United States that encourages students of all ages to develop and share ways to resist bullying and promote an atmosphere of acceptance and inclusion. Locally, the class is part of the USAG Wiesbaden Community Policing Initiative and kicked off the anti-bullying campaign for the Wiesbaden community schools.

“The foundation of community policing is about building relationships and trust with the people in the community we serve. This class is one of the many ways we interact with kids to show them that police are approachable and always here to help,” said Staff Sgt. Anastasiya Jones, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Community Policing Initiative.

During the interactive learning session, the MP’s and students talked about what bullying is, different types of bullying and the roles people play in bullying. The students played games, watched a skit performed by the MP’s and shared stories of ways they have experienced bullying.

Jones shared that this program is not just about checking a block to her, it is something she is very passionate about. “When I was seven years old my family moved from Ukraine to the U.S., and I was bullied relentlessly for years. Children and adults openly made fun of me for everything from my poor English to the clothes I wore and the food I ate.” She went on to say, “Military communities are a melting pot of nationalities and diverse cultures, there’s no better place to teach children the importance of acceptance and how to maintain an environment free from stereotypes and intolerance. Our hope is that Kids will utilize the life lessons they learn here, and when they leave, they will take these important values and share them wherever they are in the world.”

The class concluded with the students signing a covenant, signifying their commitment to stomp out bullying, in the school and community.

Sgt. Jean Carmona encouraged the children to get to know the MP’s in our community, “When you see us driving down the road waive us down and talk to us, even if it’s just to say hello. If you are having a problem or if someone is hurting you, whether it’s at home, the school, playground, or anywhere else, we want to know so that we can help.” The students cheered when Carmona excitedly reminded them, “The Wiesbaden MP’s are the best MP’s and we are here for you!”

“It has to start here and it’s important for the kids that it start now. Kids need to recognize bullying from a young age and start standing up with, and for their peers, because it gets harder as they get older,” said Angelia Hadley, Principal of Aukamm Elementary School.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Jackson, USAG Wiesbaden Provost Marshall reiterated that he is committed to forging relationships and solidifying partnerships that better our community. “Every child is entitled to feel safe no matter where they are but especially at school. All types of bullying interfere with a student's ability to learn. I challenge teachers, administrators, students and families across our community to continue working together, not only to respond to bullying, but to prevent it. We are always stronger together and together we will continue to make our schools and community a safe place to live, learn, grow and thrive,” he said.
