The Balfour Beatty Communities Foundation awarded two of their first scholarships Aug. 11 to Kristen Rivard and Daniel Fitzgerald at the Balfour Beatty Community Center. The recipients were awarded the scholarships by Maj Gen. David Perkins, commander, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, along with Lynn Rivera, community manager, Fort Carson Balfour Beatty Communities.
The scholarship was implemented by the non-profit organization, Balfour Beatty Communities Foundation this year.
Rivera said there will be an annual award for high school seniors and or undergraduate students.
She said the organization began the scholarship to honor active, disabled, fallen Soldiers and their families.
"Serving service members and their quality of life is first and foremost for Balfour Beatty", she added.
Belfour Beatty which has communities on 44 Army, Air Force and Navy installations in 20 states received a total of 52 applications. 17 applicants were chosen and awarded with a scholarship ranging from $1,000 - $2,500.
The scholarships were awarded based on the applicants' academic performance, financial need, community involvement, 500 - 1000 word essay and extracurricular activities said Rivera.
Kristen Rivard the recipient of a $2,500 scholarship is a graduate of Fountain-Fort Carson High School with a GPA of 4.75.
She is scheduled to attend Colorado School of Mines.
Kristen said she wrote her essay on her opinion of what invention had the largest impact on society and why.
"Legos, because they are the building blocks for future engineers", she wrote as her answer.
"I just want to go through school and see where it leads me", Kristen said.
My parents supported me throughout school she added.
Kristen's father, Lt. Col. Thomas Rivard assigned to 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion said, "I am proud of my daughter and thankful for the opportunity that Balfour Beatty provides for the kids."
Amy Rivard, Kristen's mother said she was also proud of Kristen and that she was excited for her daughter.
Daniel Fitzgerald who is slated to start at the University of Alaska Aug. 24, graduated from Fountain-Fort Carson High School as well with a GPA of 3.59.
Daniel said he has plans of joining the ROTC and one day joining the Judge Advocate General Corps.
He wrote his essay about his dream of joining the JAG Corps.
"It was a great surprise", said Daniel when asked how he felt about being chosen for the scholarship.
Staff Sgt. William Fitzgerald assigned to the 152nd Transportation Detachment, 43rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 43d Sustainment Brigade.
Daniel's father said "It's not bad, I feel proud" when asked about his son's achievements.
Early in life Kristen and Daniel decided that they wanted to excel said Perkins.
"You will find that you will be ahead of peers because of the things that you've been through being member of military families", he added.
