    Story by Pvt. Ellison Schuman

    1st Infantry Division

Soldiers assigned to 2nd Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, qualified on the M17 pistol during a training event at Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland, April 8, 2022.

Soldiers conducted preliminary marksmanship instruction and qualification during the event and revisited basic marksmanship fundamentals on their assigned weapons. This training helps improve soldiers' warfighting mastery and keeps them ready and resilient.

"These soldiers are doing a table VI qualification and a table V familiarization," explains 1st Lt. Lauren Martínez, the range officer in charge (OIC) for the 2-34 AR.

Table V is the practice phase, where soldiers use live ammunition in an authorized live-fire facility. The expectation is that table V is significantly more challenging than the actual qualification. Commanders and range OICs push their soldiers to execute critical skills in an immediate, complex order to build confidence and mastery of the weapon system.

Table VI is the qualification table. This table occurs at combat speed, but its design is somewhat easier than table V. When soldiers reach this table they are familiar with the weapon system, the range, and how to execute the holds and required platform transitions.

The M17 is a 9mm semi-automatic handgun weighing 30.8 ounces. It has an ergonomic design and a more modern internal striker firing mechanism to reduce trigger pull and improve accuracy and lethality.

The striker design of the M17 is less likely to snag on clothing or tactical gear when firing when compared to an external hammer and has a capacity of 17 rounds.

"This training helps improve the Soldiers' warfighting mastery by making sure they can safely operate their firearms and protect themselves in combat," said 1st Lt. Martinez. "It allows them to come out and qualify, makes them more confident with themselves and their equipment."
