FORT HOOD, TEXAS -- Hundreds of high school students from around Central Texas visited Fort Hood to get a glimpse of what being a Soldier is all about during Fort Hood’s Career Expo April 19-20 at Sadowski Field

Units from across Fort Hood participated in showing the students the latest and greatest in equipment, technology, and even ran the students through an obstacle course.

"Over 700 students from Killeen, Belton, Copperas Cove and even as far as Dallas came to visit,” said Maj. Brian Burns, III Armored Corps engagement chief.

Military vehicles of all types lined Sadowski field, including a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, an M1A2 Abrams tank, and more. Soldiers from across III Armored corps stood ready to explain to the students the purpose of each vehicle.

"We allowed them to get inside and get familiar with the vehicles, and we showed them some of the capabilities of it to pique their interest,” said Sgt. Caleb Dumas, Assigned to 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, "They can see some of what we do and can encourage some of the students to explore this occupation after high school.”

After seeing the static displays, the students ran through the obstacle course and competed against one another.

"The events today gave these students a good full experience of the stuff we go through on a daily basis,” said Staff Sgt. Frank Gonzales, Assigned to 3rd Cavalry Regiment, "It also gives them a better understanding of what their future could be if they decide to join the Army."

Maj. Gen. Steven Gilland, deputy commanding general-maneuver, III Armored Corps, officiated a swearing-in ceremony, where students witnessed future Army Soldiers taking the step to serve in the military. The oath of enlistment is something every service member must promise and adhere to for their entire military career.

It's been two years since Fort Hood held the career expo. Allowing high schoolers to visit the installation and interact with Soldiers is a great opportunity to open their eyes to the benefits of a career in the U.S. Army.

The event started five years ago and has since grown to become a major event that Fort Hood hosts annually.
