CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan -- Marine Corps Community Services Behavioral Health branch hosted the "Ages and Stages” event during Child Abuse Prevention Month on April 30, 2022.

The "Ages and Stages” event was an opportunity to bring awareness of the resources available to children who have been affected and how the community can actively prevent child abuse. Behavior Health programs, such as The Family Advocacy Program, New Parent Support Program, and Prevention & Education Program, all assisted in the coordination of the event.

“We wanted to show and encourage kids that they can have the power to prevent child abuse and neglect.” said Lisa Besette, the family advocacy program manager with MCCS. “We’re bringing awareness and by talking about it openly, I think people are more likely to consider making a report if they’re concerned about a child.”

This year’s event featured an egg hunt, a bounce house, a food truck, a fire truck, an obstacle course for kids, information for community resources, and indoor and outdoor activities for the entire family. Families were also encouraged to wear superhero attire to encourage child empowerment.

“It’s really important to build children's self-confidence and so they have ability to say, ‘I can do things,’” said Lee Hayne, a fitness coordinator for Camp Hansen. “It’s really touching to see kids run to their parents with their happy faces, after they’ve completed one of the events. I love seeing my daughter come to me with a smile on her face,”

MCCS has joined to observe National Child Abuse Prevention Month by hosting events like “Ages to stages”. MCCS also offers classes, workshops and fun activities for the whole family all year round.

“Here it’s about the community between all of us. In Okinawa, we have a community with all cultures. So anytime you can have a place where a bunch of people can come together and have fun is a good thing to have.” said Hayne.
