A Rancho Cucamonga, California native and 2015 graduate of Los Osos High School is serving aboard Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105) while conducting operations in the Philippine Sea.
Seaman Triniti Vild joined the Navy in March of 2020 and is a Sonar Technician (Surface), also known as STG, serving aboard USS Dewey, which is forward-deployed to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.
Sonar Technician’s track, classify and localize contacts of interest. They operate surface sonar and other oceanographic systems and operate surface ship underwater fire control systems. Vild explained why her rate is essential to the Navy.
“My job deals with using sound navigation and ranging to handle all underwater and surface warfare which helps keep my ship and shipmates safe,” said Vild. “STGs are vital to the Navy because without us, the Navy wouldn’t have the capability to track submarines or launch torpedoes. When trouble starts arising, my team and I provide the most appropriate suggestions on navigation, course, and speed to ensure that our ship is always on the safest route possible.”
Many Sailors will tell you that they have a cool job, but Vild explained why she loves her job.
“My favorite part of being an STG is the family that I have gained from it,” said Vild. “My colleagues aren’t just the people that I work with. We trust in each other and our knowledge every day. We help each other in ways you wouldn’t outside of the Navy. We educate each other, both on Navy topics as well as sharing life lessons and helping each other with personal growth. They truly are some of my best friends here on the Dewey.”
It seems as if nearly every Sailor has a moment or accomplishment that they look back on with pride, and Vild’s proudest moment so far happened last week.
“So far, my proudest Navy accomplishment would be getting Blue Jacket of the Quarter for 2022,” said Vild. “I push my hardest and give my all in anything I have a hand in. I am involved in multiple ways throughout the command as well as in my division. I am constantly pushing myself to get qualifications that most seaman STGs don’t commonly have. Getting Blue Jacket of the Quarter was one of the few times I was very proud of myself for how far I’ve come.”
Many Sailors attribute their success, in part, to those that support them and Vild constantly receives nothing but support from her family.
“My family is very supportive of me being in the military,” said Vild. “I know they miss me very much, but they remind me with every email, text, or phone call how much they love me and are proud of me and that they’re praying for me. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I do. They’re my overall support system and the push that keeps me going from the moment I wake up to the moment I lay down at night. I am truly blessed to have a family like mine.”
Dewey recently shifted homeports from San Diego to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka and coming to Japan with the ship has highlighted one of Vild’s favorite parts of being in the Navy.
“My favorite thing about being in the Navy is the travel that I get to experience,” said Vild. “Before the Navy, I had traveled, but the Navy has brought me to places I never would have even thought to travel to on my own and being stationed in Japan is definitely a life experience. I have tried food that I probably never would have given a thought back in the states. I have broadened my horizons and expanded my travels. I’m definitely enjoying and trying to make the most of my time while being here in Japan.”
Dewey is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific. U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet is the largest forward-deployed fleet and routinely operates and interacts with 35 maritime nations while conducting missions to preserve and protect critical regional partnerships.
