“Auf Wiedersehen” – Wiesbaden Garrison Commander bids farewell to local leaders.

Colonel Mario A. Washington says "Goodbye" to the Lord Mayors of Mainz and Wiesbaden and to the President of Westhessen Police Presidium.

WIESBADEN, Germany - "Auf Wiedersehen" literally means "See you again". U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Commander, Colonel Mario A. Washington, said these words to Gert-Uwe Mende, Lord Mayor of Wiesbaden, and to Michael Ebling, Lord Mayor of Mainz, during his last official visits on May 23, 2022. When both Lord Mayors returned this farewell greeting, it is clear that the two-year cooperation, which was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, went well in all areas.

Before Washington officially hands over the Garrison leadership to his successor in July, he took the opportunity to personally bid farewell to civic and community leaders in the garrison's footprint.

"I hope you enjoyed your stay here," said Wiesbaden's Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende on May 23, recognizing the last two years of good cooperation.
"I felt very comfortable here. I would have preferred to meet all our host nation partners more often, but unfortunately the pandemic regulations did not allow us to do so. We can only keep our fingers crossed, that more face-to-face meetings will be possible in the future," Washington said.

Michael Ebling, Lord Mayor of the City of Mainz, echoed the same sentiment, "We really enjoy working with the U.S. Army, but unfortunately the pandemic has prevented us from meeting more often."

Washington also met with local Polizei leadership. “The police are our most important relationship,” emphasized Washington on May 24, talking to Stefan Müller, president of the Westhessen Police Presidium. “Security is our number one priority and our community in Wiesbaden needs you and your team to provide us with security for our homes and our Families. That is exactly what you provided us with,” said Washington.
