By Master Sgt. Dave Thompson SETAF-AF Public Affairs Office
Vicenza, Italy - Col. James Grady and Sgt. Maj. Victoria Reeves, U. S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa command surgeon and senior enlisted advisor, along with key leaders from the Vicenza Army Health Center, hosted members of the Botswanan Defense Force at the Vicenza Health Center on Camp Ederle, 28 April 2022.
Lt. Col. Ray Molopo, operations and medical officer, and Maj. Moffat Mokgosi, training officer, both from the Botswanan Defense Force special forces regiment, were welcomed by the panel of Army medical professionals and given a comprehensive overview of the U.S. Army health care system and its impact on force readiness.
“Our focus and primary goal is the readiness of our Soldiers,” said Grady. “We have a system that manages and maintains the health needs of our force and it’s all geared towards having Soldiers ready to deploy.”
Molopo spoke about the state of Botswana’s army, how they are structured and outlined some of their medical challenges and requirements from an operational stand point. His questions centered on learning and building sustainable medical processes that enable the readiness posture of his nation’s defense force and improving medical capabilities.
Col. Kevin Parker, the commander of dental health activity Italy, discussed force health protection, levels of care and highlighted the various medical disciplines and services offered at the Ederle health center. Mr. Del Campbell, health systems specialist, then led the Botswanan partners on a tour of the clinic.
“We serve the Soldiers and the entire Vicenza military community at this facility for most routine health care,” explained Campbell. “For emergent care, we partner with our Italian hosts at San Bortolo Hospital in town who provide our emergency and in-patient health needs.”
Molopo added the BDF is interested in incorporating more first responder training, improving medical logistics and preventative medicine care into their medical framework.
“Botswana is a valued partner and we look forward to continuing the dialogue and exchanging ideas and best medical practices which build on our partnership and strengthen both our army’s health care systems,” said Grady.
